Food borne illness of the Month.
All through time humans have been faced with outbreaks of illnesses caused by food borne bacteria. In early civilizations it was believed to be the work of gods, demons or other supernatural beings. As knowledge evolved the real culprits were discovered and the search for ways of eliminating the little buggers has continued to progress.
This search for new and better ways to kill these bacteria is the total focus currently being promoted by both the mainstream conventional health care industry and government bodies such as our US CDC or Center for Disease Control.
The most recent weapon brought to the arsenal has been the approval of the use of Irradiation for our foods, which is very controversial. The “anti crowd” seems to think there will be long term health effects when this method becomes a standard. The “for crowd” uses the argument that there is not enough evidence of these health concerns or that “in the amounts being used the risks are acceptable.”
Either one of the “for” arguments are a little scary if proven wrong, meaning that a lot of people will have had their health negatively affected. This can be especially ironic in that everyone becomes exposed to the risks so that a very small segment might be less susceptible to the original bacteria.
This seems to be the same with irradiation and all of the synthetic chemical methods used as antibacterials, both on our food and in our lives in general. We are not only killing those few harmful bacteria, we are also wiping out all of the beneficial ones which we must have to survive. Not to mention the fact that many of these beneficial bacteria are our first and strongest defense for the harmful variety in the first place.
This knowledge is not new nor is it alternative thinking, so it is a puzzle why this “wipe out the bugs” mentality reigns supreme. This is an answer I do not have, but what I have found is that there is something better and more effective in preventing these food borne illnesses.
You have to keep it a secret though. So don’t tell anyone because if you do, everyone will want to do it and stay healthy…
There are several things which you must do to make sure you or your family are not the ones who become ill from food borne bugs..
1st – Cleanliness.
There is big difference between cleanliness and chemical sterilization which is actually an oxymoron. While you can kill most living organisms on any surface with chemical cleaners you are leaving behind chemical residues which most often can cause long term problems worse than the bacteria. While technically sterile these chemical residues are still a threat to your health.
Warm water, an organic soap and a little good ole elbow grease will wash away a large portion of any bacteria which are present. This will keep bacterial colonies from becoming too strong and allow your body to handle them with relative ease as long as the next steps are taken. We have learned that there is a need to keep ourselves and our homes clean and free of clutter especially of the organic type (such as garbage, food scraps etc.). As stated this will keep the harmful organism from gaining enough strength to overcome our defenses. As far as cleanliness this is all that is required. Sterilization is not a good idea especially if the process leaves chemical residues.
2nd – Provide your body with adequate nutritional compounds-
A quick question can easily show the shear power of this little step….
Have you ever had a doctor not say that diet is important to help you overcome any health issue? Every doctor’s visit, every health pamphlet, every nutritionist and every government health publication mentions diet as an important factor in regaining or maintaining your health.
So why don’t we listen?
We all know this, so get with it and live it.
The simple fact of nutrition is that you need a majority of your diet to be fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts and legumes. And as much as possible should be eaten raw. Raw is the natural way our bodies recognize foods and are able to utilize their nutritional compounds most efficiently. Besides a whole lot of the most nutritious foods are really delicious when eaten raw. Reprogram your brain to think of fresh raw fruits and veggies with every meal and when you want a snack.
And these raw foods should be raised organically not only for better nutritional content but also to eliminate so many of the chemicals present in conventional food. This is discussed more here.
Even though we know that we should be eating a healthy diet many of us are not. With our fast paced lives it is difficult to take the time and effort to find and prepare high quality produce. So many times we resort to those quick processed products they call food.
Because of the low nutritional quality of so much of our foods we are simply not getting enough of those critical nutrients. On top of this so many of the chemicals in our food and in everything we come in contact with all day, every day are destroying those beneficial bacterial colonies we so desperately need to keep us safe.
Unless our diet is full of fresh foods and we eliminate as many harmful chemicals in our lives, we need to supplement both natural whole food nutrition and probiotics (or beneficial bacteria). These supplements should not be chemically produced or isolated in any way. They should be produced from whole foods with all the nutrient compounds intact. 3rd – Reduce the chemical madness. It is amazing just how much and how many chemicals come into contact with our bodies. There is no time of the day when this contact is not taking place even when you are sleeping. Most standard mattresses and bedding will off gas chemicals for years and if you use regular laundry detergent you add more chemicals each time you wash.
Other sources of chemicals are municipal water systems, processed foods, conventional produce, cleaning supplies, food storage containers and all your personal care products (shampoo, lotions, make-up, etc.).
When you see the enormity of the amounts of chemicals we are in contact with, the mantra of “It is safe at theses low doses” kind of loses it believability. Each one is taxing your immune system just a little bit and when all of these little bits add up we get a major health crisis.
It is critical to cut down your exposure to as many of these as possible and thankfully there are companies willing to learn how to produce our products more naturally.
4th – Enjoy a healthier life
That’s it – That’s all it takes to protect yourself and your family from all those bugs out there wanting to make you sick. You have provided your body all the nutrients it needs and you have eliminated as much day to day stress on your immune system freeing it to keep you safe from the bigger hazards of life, so that you can enjoy life.
