How many are really effected
According to the CDC there were 3630 reported cases of West Nile Virus in the US for 2007. Of these, 1217 cases of West Nile encephalitis and West Nile meningitis were reported with 124 deaths.
The CDC’s primary advise for combating these numbers is to reduce mosquito bites first and then it goes on to advocate mosquito population control both on the individual level and governmental level. This is a common sense approach which will help but there seems to be two fundamental flaws in the overall outlook.
Deet’s Health Risks
The first flaw is the method of reducing the number of bites being promoted. That is the use of Deet repellents which they claim to be completely safe when used as directed.
The real truth is that few really know how to use it properly and there is the usual controversy on whether deet will cause long term health complications. It is known that deet enters the body thru the skin with larger amounts being ingested from longer exposure, when used with alcohol and when used in sunscreen combinations. A great site for more info is the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition Website.
Another factor in the large scale use of deet is the environmental impact which is becoming huge. Not only is deet toxic to some cold water fish it is also toxic to some fresh water zoo-plankton which is a major food source for other fish. It is also very slow to breakdown in the environment bringing a greater possibility of accumulating.
Chemical Risk to All verses Virus Risk to A Few
The second flaw with deet is that we are exposing large numbers of people and the environment to a chemical known to be harmful, to prevent a disease which only affects a very small percentage of the population. This is a common form of madness which seems to be prevalent in today’s society.
No where on the CDC website can it be found to say the best defense to this and every disease is to provide your body with a healthy immune system thus allowing it to heal itself.
This is especially true for the group with the highest risk of acquiring West Nile Virus. According to the CDC “most of the deaths due to WNV during 2002 were among people over 50 years old. Half of those deaths were among people over 77 years old”. It seems better to promote improving immune health of everyone especially the elderly than to promote coating ourselves with a toxic chemical.
The most important factor in providing healthier immune systems is to provide the body with all the live whole food nutrient compounds and probiotics it needs. Doing this along with eliminating as many of the thousands of other chemicals from contact and exercising is all that is usually needed for this healthier immune system.
For most people in today’s society the best place to get these live whole food nutrients and probiotics is with a natural product. This product should be processed by using the least amount of heat possible thereby maintaining the highest nutrient compounds. The best such live whole food nutrient product is “The Feast“. I like it so much I joined the company.
When we start to focus on being healthy, many of the diseases like West Nile Virus will lose it’s punch and the numbers of those affected will come down. This will have the added effect of having less chemicals being produced which were used for bite prevention and synthetic drug treatments.
Even though there is a better way to prevent West Nile Virus, there is still the pesky problem of mosquitoes and their little telltale itchy welts. They are still unpleasant and a desire to repel them is still strong. Thankfully there is good news here.
There are alternatives to deet that are effective but are required to be applied more often. The simple truth is we don’t have the right to harm the environment with harmful chemicals just to save some time applying more often.
Spending a little more time is such a little thing to help your health and the environment plusmany of the alternative repellents have ingredients which will sooth and help heal the bites from the squitters which do get in. Look for certified organic bug sprays and use all you need. Another added benefit will be the smell, you won’t be so slow to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Being outside and being active will also help keep you stronger and healthier so get out there and enjoy.
